Orientation will be Monday, August 30, at 7:00 p.m.,  and Wednesday, September 1, at 10:00 a.m.

The overarching aim is to deepen discipleship through better understanding of the biblical texts and their message.  The study helps group members understand that Jesus is rooted in Judaism and the Scriptures of Judaism, and that Christianity and the New Testament are rooted in the Scriptures of Judaism—our Old Testament.

The Study Manual guides daily study and preparation for the weekly group meeting. The main elements in the format are designated by scriptural phrases:

  • “They have no wine” (John 2:3) is a brief statement about the human condition and alerts the reader to some aspect of daily life that Scripture can shed light on.
  • “Beginning with Moses and all the prophets” (Luke 24:27) is a way of referring to Scripture as a whole and signals the fact that we can understand Jesus in the Gospels better by understanding the Old Testament better. 
  • “Do you want to become his disciples, too?” (John 9:27, New International Version) is designed to stimulate thoughtful reflection so readers can come to their own conclusions about what their own discipleship calls for.

Accompanying each day’s Scripture reading assignments are suggestions of things to look for that take the reader deeper into Scripture. As readers become aware of detail in Scripture, they might ask themselves repeatedly, What am I to make of this? The study manual provides space for writing notes on insights, observations, and questions related to the Scripture, and for putting into words personal perceptions of Jesus from the week’s Scripture.

We're looking for a Director of Music, (1) to play piano / keyboard and lead the congregation in song during the Sunday morning worship services, (2) to choose music for, inspire and lead a small adult choir, (3) to grow a youth and children’s music program, (4) to plan and provide special music during the Christmas and Easter seasons, and (5) to be an enthusiastic, high-energy participant in the spiritual life of the church.  Our congregation is mostly a mixture of older Anglos and younger Hispanic families. Sunday worship is a blend of contemporary praise music, country Gospel and traditional Methodist hymns, and our new Director of Music should be comfortable in all three styles. We worship in English but we sing in English and Spanish. We have a keyboard, piano, Orff xylophone, chimes and congas, and the pastor plays the guitar. The compensation is about $700 per month to start, for an estimated 6 - 8 hours of work per week (more during the Christmas and Easter seasons).  This works out to about $9,000 per year.  Additional money is available for weddings and funerals when non-church members are using our facilities.

During the months of July and August, Palm Springs would like to invite Christian soloists and instrumentalists to share their gifts in our worship service, from just providing an anthem and an offertory as part of the Sunday morning service, to a prelude-to-postlude leading the congregation in song throughout the service.  We will provide an honorarium based on the breadth of the music that is provided.

FYI:  In answer to all the various questions about the worship service:

The worship service is an hour and 15 minutes long. We begin with a brief musical prelude.  We follow with either a congregational hymn, or a series of praise songs normally led by the pastor on acoustic guitar. There are various short instrumental pieces played throughout the service -- "Jesus loves me" for the children's sermon, "Hear Our Prayer, O Lord" after the pastoral prayer, a doxology after the offering.  In addition, there is an Anthem (taught to the choir, rehearsed by the choir and sung by the choir on a weekly basis, or else provided as special music by a guest soloist) and a brief (2 - 3 minutes) Offertory played during the time the collection is being taken up.   If you are coming to do the special music, we would expect the Anthem and the Offertory.  At the end of the service, there is a congregational response to the benediction, and a postlude.

Leesburg - Women's Weekend Retreat
 
March 7th through the 9th, our United Methodist Women returned from their retreat in Leesburg.  The theme was Practicing the Presence!  They were among the 810 women who attended from all over the state of Florida and the United States.  Maureen Still provided wonderful, spirit lifting music.  It was a time of spiritual renewal and quiet contemplation.  A full brochure of the event is available here.  Click Here.  Check back on our site in October for next years registration and join us!

Maureen Still performed at First United Methodist Church of the Palm Beaches, Friday March 14th

Our United Methodist Women returned from Leesburg stomping their feet and rocking to the music of Maureen Still and encouraged the rest of the church to join them at the Maureen Still concert at First United Methodist Church of the Palm Beaches.

Maureen gave an awesome performance.  She closed with a song requested by the women who attended Leesburg.  The song, "The Vine" was written by Maureen for the 2007 Leesburg Women's Retreat.

Our Boy Scouts head off to the Scoutmasters Camporee February 22 - 24 at Markham Park.
Our Boy Scout Troop 306, under the leadership of Nelson Erazo, head off to the 49th Annual Scoutmasters Camporee this coming weekend, February 22 - 24.  Again they will be building a gateway and competing in various events.  We pray for good weather, that they enjoy a spirit of healthy competition and good sportsmanship, and for their safety.  If they win, they win for the glory of God, and if they lose, their work is still for the glory of God.  But the important thing is not whether they win or lose... having competed fairly, having done their best ... they are already winners!  Scouting builds character.  "It is not what the boy does to the wood, but what the wood does to the boy". ]]> 2008-02-17T00:00:00-05:00 Seder for Holy Thursday http://www.godsplace4u.com/n/seder_for_holy_thursday.html http://www.godsplace4u.com/n/seder_for_holy_thursday.html

Our Boy Scouts Return from Lincoln Marti Camporee ... tired but triumphant!
The hard work that our Scouts put into their preparation for the Lincoln Marti Camporee has been rewarded!  Despite having competed against troops up to four times their size, our Scouts return with a 2nd Place award for their Gateway and a 3rd Place Overall award. 

Nelson Eraso was the Campmaster for this years Camporee.  He chose a "Pirates" theme for the Camporee.  In keeping with the theme, our Scouts built an elaborate Pirate Ship as their gateway.  Check back later this week for pictures of the gateway and of other activities that took place during the Camporee.

Pastor Bob joined the boys on Saturday Morning at the Camporee and offered the opening prayer.
